According to federal health investigators, cases of an outbreak of salmonella food poisoning have been firmly linked to kratom supplements.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday, at least 40 people in 27 states have been reported sick in the outbreak.
The CDC said that no one has died. 45 percent of those made ill, though, have been hospitalized.
And the CDC said it found the missing link — the culprit bacteria in samples of kratom.
Seventy-six local officials in China have been punished for failing to prevent and stop the production of contaminated drug capsules.
According to the State Food and Drug Administration, the officials were from drug supervision agencies in five provinces and the municipality of Chongqing.
